What’s New?
New Measures:
- MRP Only Measures
In order to answer questions about the differences between “attached” and “unattached” patients, we have expanded the use of filters that we have used to approximate the “attached” population in the past. For select measures, we have added a new option that includes only patients that have a designated most responsible provider (MRP) at the clinic. These measures are only meaningful at the clinic level and up. At the individual physician or nurse practitioner level, the measure will always be the same as the “all active patient” version. For example, at the physician/NP level, Diabetes screening for patients with MRP will have the same result as Diabetes screening.
- Patients Marked Active by Age and Sex/Gender Used
The following measures have been added to provide additional insight into the composition of a patient panel. Most HDC measures define active patients as those who are both marked active in the EMR and have had an encounter in the past 3 years. In contrast, these measures are based solely on a patient’s active status in the EMR.
When used alongside the Active patients by age and Active patients by sex/gender used measures, this measure set can help users better understand the demographics of patients who remain marked as active in the EMR despite not having a recent encounter.

- Population Pyramid
We’ve modernized the Population Pyramid. This upgrade improves performance, provides greater flexibility for future enhancements, and delivers a more intuitive experience for users.
- Interactive Measure Selection
To make it easier to understand and switch between below measures, the previous radio button controls have been replaced with interactive selection cards
- Total Active Patients
- Total Encounters
- Average Encounters per Patient
Each card includes a description to help users quickly understand the measure they are viewing.
- Enhanced Controls and Visualization Experience
The Population Pyramid page now includes:
- Dedicated Primary Source and Comparison Source selection areas
- Improved legends and source labeling
- Enhanced tooltips that display age range, gender, and values for both selected data sources, providing additional context and making comparisons easier
- Bright Spot Articles
To better showcase real-world examples of quality improvement in practice, relevant Bright Spot Articles are now displayed directly within the Single Measure View (SMV) page. You can always visit Bright Spots Archives – Health Data Coalition to read all the stories of how HD Discover has been used to support Family Medicine in BC.

While Bright Spot content is currently available for a limited number of measures, we plan to continue expanding this feature over time.
- Data Sources – Updated Colour Palette
A new standardized colour palette has been introduced across the application, including:
- Dashboards
- Single Measure Views (SMV)
- QI Panel
- Data Source lists
- Charts, graphs, and legends
In addition to improving visual consistency and accessibility, data source colours are now assigned by position rather than dynamically. This means your charts and visualizations will maintain a consistent look and feel even as your data sources changes over time.
